COMMUNITY CARE
Yalu design and deliver programs and services which address the needs of the Yolŋu people it serves. These include:
The Improving Multidisciplinary Responses Program places Yolŋu cultural knowledge in the centre of the design and delivery of child and family services, enhancing and improving holistic responses to Yolŋu families with multiple and complex needs.
Phase One:
Gather and provide data on service gaps for complex case management and timely access to specialist child diagnostics teams for children with cognitive and behavioural problems. This is actioned through local decision-making by taking a consultative approach across the East Arnhem communities of Galiwin'ku, Milingimbi, Ramingining and Gapuwiyak.
Phase Two:
This is the implementation phase where the research informs the co-design of the model with a focus on enhancing multi-disciplinary service delivery for a specialist child service model that is fit-for-purpose and includes the development of resources for Yolŋu across East Arnhem Land.
Phase Three:
This is the evaluation of all phases. Outcomes sought include improved engagement of community members with existing services and documentation of the ‘deep story’ of adverse childhood experiences. This work supports the development of a business case for increased childhood diagnostics including paediatrics and a fit-for-purpose, multi-disciplinary health and wellbeing model for children with complex needs.
Stronger Communities for Children
The Stronger Community for Children (SCFC) initiative is a place-based community development program which aims to give Yolŋu children and young people the best possible start in life. It does this through safer families and communities, nurturing educational environments, positive participation opportunities and cultural events that help young people to grow up strong, healthy and confident.
Yalu is proud to be a Facilitating Partner for the SCFC program where we deliver cultural education programs in the community. Governed by a local community board, we work with stakeholders to distribute funding from the Australian Government to community-based service providers and ensure funds are used appropriately.
SCFC aims to give children and young people a clear and healthy pathway through their early life by:
-
strengthening the family’s ability to take care of children and young people
-
providing opportunities to participate in cultural events
-
supporting children to be ready for school
-
building the community’s ability to lead, plan and prioritise services that children and families need
-
building the capacity of Indigenous organisations to design and deliver services.
